Tour Map

Maras Moray Tour is an excellent half day excursion of Cusco if you want something easy, scenic, and actually worth your time. It is not that stressful and yet, it provides you with the true picture of how developed the Incas were. You will also pass by the Sacred Valley, whose landscape is open, mountainous, and small-town, and which all contribute to making the entire process seem genuine.

At Moray, we’ll see circular terraces that resemble an amphitheater in the natural world but were really an agricultural laboratory used by the Incas. All levels have varying microclimates and this gives them the opportunity to experiment on crops. This will be a short experience, but surprisingly impressive once you understand how it worked.

Then we’ll go on to the Maras Salt Mines, thousands of salt pools on the mountainside. There are still local families that use traditional techniques in them nowadays making the place look very real and alive. It is a nice place to take photos and a cheap way to have something different without having to spend the entire day on a tour.

We will meet around at about 8.30 A.M. at a middle-ground in Cusco (Plaza Espinar) which will be an easy-going and fluid beginning of the day. Then we embark on the scenic 1.5-hour trip to the Sacred Valley, passing farmlands and villages on the way.

Our first stop is Moray. At the arrival, you will take a tourist ticket or enter, and you will get a guided tour. These circular terraces served as an Inca laboratory farm and the guide will tell you how all that was used, and you will have a little bit of free time afterwards to walk around, take photos and admire the views at your own leisure.

After that we’ll proceed to the Maras Salt Mines by car. It is not that far to drive, and upon arrival there, you will get to know how the local residents still produce salt in life-time methods. We will also be led through the steps and you will have time to explore perspectives and capture photographs of the thousands of salt pools within the mountainside.

Having finished the visit, we will begin to go back to Cusco. The coming home drive is always leisurely and we normally arrive at about 3:00 P.M. and drop you at the vicinity of the city center so that you can resume your day or even have lunch.
