The Machu Picchu By Car 2 Days will be the right choice in case you desire something less classic and more adventurous yet still highly structured and easy to follow. Instead of taking a train, we’ll go through the Andes and jungles, which actually makes the trip closer to life and nature. We will see mountains, the rivers and a shifting landscape throughout.

A part of this trip that is one of the best is the road to Hidroelectrica. It is a very scenic albeit lengthy drive whose scenery changes slowly as you pass closer to mountains and the surrounding turns into a warmer and greener terrain. It is a flat and easy walk there to Aguas Calientes, passing along the train tracks with jungle and river surrounding you.

Machu Picchu takes the second day all through. We are going to arrive there and be shown around by a guide and literally know what we are looking at (not just walk around the place taking pictures). Everything will leave you with little time so you can enjoy your time at your own pace. In general, it is the combination of adventure, nature and one of the most popular places

We are going to begin early, at 6:30 A.M. by picking you up at your hotel in Cusco. We then head off to Hidroelectrica which takes approximately 5 to 6 hours of driving. The landscape is also fluctuating between high mountainous and more jungle-like along the way. We will pass by valleys, rivers, and little towns, and take small stops so that you could stretch, rest, or take snacks.

At midday we shall come to our lunch at Hidroelectrica where we will rest a little. Then, the guide will describe the route that we will walk along and then we are going to go towards Aguas Calientes. It is relatively smooth and has few uphill and downhill drops, and so it is not difficult to walk up the trail, particularly when one is not a hiker.

It is a 3 hour (11km) walk, following the railways as the river and the mountains surround us. We would be able to do it at a slow pace, take photos and appreciate nature. Upon reaching Aguas Calidades, we will be lodging in the hotel. During the evenings they will be briefed by the guide on Machu Picchu and the following day plans.

Day 1 Statistics:

  • Distance: approx. 200 km by car + 11 km walk
  • Highest point: ~4,300 m
  • Lowest point: 2,040 m
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate

This day will start very early , we’ll have breakfast at about 5:00 A.M. Then you have an option of walking to Machu Picchu or visiting it by bus (optional). In case of walking, we’ll start at approximately 4:30 A.M.; in case of bus, the ride lasts approximately 25-30 minutes. We will meet at the entrance at about 6:00 A.M. and start the visit.

The guided tour takes approximately 2.5 hours and this is the time when we visit the key places in Machu Picchu. The guide will describe the history, temples and terraces in simple and understandable style. We will get time to have snapshots and sightseeing and have some free time in the aftermath of the tour to embark on an exploration or do some optional Huayna Picchu hike, you must book in advance for this.

Later we’ll go back to Aguas Calientes later and then you have some time to have lunch or walk around the town. In the afternoon, we’ll return to Hidroelectrica (in between 3 to 3.5 hours) where mode of transport will be present. Driving back to Cusco can be completed in approximately 6 hours and it makes an appearance in the evening.
