Tour Overview
There is nothing like a tour of Cusco; it is a journey into a city with stones that speak. We start with peeling the layers of the history in the Plaza de Armas where the cathedrals of the colonial period are erected directly on the ruins of the Inca palaces. This is to make you get into the mood of the city with the Andean energy in the narrow cobblestone streets, the odor of the local markets and the silent dignity of old buildings.
You are guided to the sacred geometry of Qorikancha (the Temple of the Sun) to the huge boulders of the archaeological sites that look down upon the valley, cut to precision. You will be able to see with your own eyes how the advanced engineering of the Inca will be combined with the art of the colonial period. Your guide will not simply place dates on a list along the way; he/she will tell you the why behind the traditions, the secret stories in the buildings, and the living culture that still beats in the heart of the city today.
You will have seen not only viewpoints and temples by the time we close down in the afternoon. You will have seen the life of Cusco every day with its artisans of the old industries as well as the vivid spectacle of the markets here. It is a light and yet profound voyage that leaves you with a complete idea of the reason why this city used to be regarded as the Navel of the World. Not only will you go back to your hotel with photographs, but experience with the heritage of the Andes.
You start your exploration into the heart of the Andes with an option of speed, either at 8:00 A.M. or 1:00 P.M. We begin at Qorikancha, the Temple of the Sun, where the colonialism of the present collides with the gold-laced past of the Inca. Passing next to colorful murals and unbelievably accurate stonework, your guide will tell you about the rituals that have in some way or other characterized this sacred area. It is a peep into the atmosphere of Cusco, a city that does not have its history behind glass, but is constructed into the very walls that you feel.
We drive out of the city center to Sacsayhuaman which is at a high altitude of 3,700 meters. The magnitude of the ambition of the Inca is evident here. You will walk between huge blocks of limestone, some of which are more than 100 tons, and have a panoramic view of the Cusco valley and the mountains that cover it. It goes on with brief and deliberate visits to the mystical carved passages of Qenqo, the reddish stone ramparts of Puka Pukara and on to the peaceful flowing fountains of Tambomachay. The sites have a varying approach to the way the Inca controlled stone, water, and mountain.
The tour finishes at the Plaza de Armas where the morning one starts at around 2:00 P.M. (or 6:00 P.M. in the afternoon session). You are in the middle of it all and are in an ideal position to have a coffee, take time to consider the work of engineering wonders you have seen and then see the afternoon light strike the cathedral. It is an easy passage between the distant past and the living pace of the contemporary Cusco.
