Tour Overview
Just imagine that you are standing in the shadows of Ausangate massif where it is thin with no matching clarity. The 7 Lakes circuit is more a hiking trip rather than a sensory refresher. You pass through highland meadows with open areas with no noise, only wind and the cry of an alpaca. Here the clatter of the modern world drowsiness meets with the immense silent majesty of the Andes.
The lakes are there like concealed jewels--some clear and turquoise, some blue in a dark, inky vein--the mountain peaks being grand and jagged and just as perfectly reflected in them. It is not a race and it is a stroll through living history. You will be traveling through isolated villages where life still drags at the rhythm of the seasons and it is for this reason that you get a rare glimpse into a culture that is strongly attached to the ground.
It is a trip that is wear and tear, where your hiking shoes are changed by the relaxing hot springs of nature as the afternoon winds on. It is the ideal combination of the physical test and the relaxation of the soul and the meal is a tribute to the land it was made on. You come with not only photos, but also the view that the high mountains alone can offer.
In Cusco, you start off in the pre-dawn silence of your day. We will start at 4.30 A.M., going southward as the first light reaches the Andean valleys. The long three-hour ride is a leisurely initiation into highland existence; you will see the world of the highland take shape through the window, the farmers setting off on their morning, the llamas in the frost, and the glowing mountains of the Cordillera Vilcanota, calling to you.
We have passed by the time we reach the little village of Pacchanta, which is perched up at 4,400 meters above sea level, and the air is clean and invigorating. We set out on a slow, deliberate walk to the very center of the mountains after a light breakfast to give us energy to get the start. The trail then beings its ways with glacier panoramic views of mineral rich slopes over approximately two and half hours until one gets to the vantage point which is the Ausangate lookout. Here the seven lakes become visible to us in a range of turquoise and emerald, undisturbed utterly, and set against the immense and snow-crested silence of the mountains.
It is time of decompression in the afternoon. You may then, after returning to Pacchanta to a lunch of local Andean dishes, either drown in the natural hot springs, and have the waters, impregnated with minerals, to take the strain out of the morning as you gaze up at the very mountains you have just scaled. We will get you back in Cusco by 6:30 in the evening, fatigued in the most pleasant possible manner, and with a view out there in the high Andes that will not come to us again.
