Tour Overview
The South Valley has a different beat, it is less musical, more open and more concentrated at the crossroads between art and history. We start with the swelling hills and open valleys which characterize the southern approach of Cusco. It is cool outside and the atmosphere is relaxed, which preconditions the day of the Andes exploration of the hidden part in which the people decrease and the scenery clarifies. It is a travel of passion to those who enjoy the gradual introduction of culture, traveling around picturesque villages and sunny city plazas depicting the daily rhythm of modern highland life.
We are going to the Sistine Chapel of the Americas, Andahuaylillas, where plain colonial exterior leads to the dazzling interior of 16th century murals and gold leaf interiors. It is a unique experience to stand there and feel the burden of the past when your guide tells you how these colonial buildings were constructed on top of the pre-Inca foundations to make a striking course in the layers of cultures. In the afternoon we make the return to Cusco on easy roads and leave you with a profound admiration of the silent power of the Quispicanchis peoples and the artistic spirit of the highlands of the south.
The adventure of the South valley starts at 8 am and the city is left behind as one takes a short, beautiful ride southwest. The day starts with a hilly landscape and a river, which imparts a relaxed slowness to the day by the fresh Andean air. It is not, in itself, merely a drive; it is a smooth passage into a quieter part of the mountains, where the scenery is more open, and the history more personal and familiar.
The initial experience of the past is at Tipon, the Temple of Water. In this case, you will be walking around perfectly preserved terraces and staircases on which the water still flows through precision-cut Inca canals. It is an art of ancient engineering and ritual. It is then that we jump back in time to Pikillasca, a huge Wari city before Inca. Strolling along its wide stones streets and old walls, you get a unique view into the civilization, which prospered centuries ago, before the Inca, and a good idea of how many centuries people have lived in these valleys.
The last visit is a breathtaking change of direction in the Church of San Pedro Apostol in Andahuaylillas. The Sistine Chapel of the Americas as it is called has a simple exterior that conceals a masterpiece of gold leaf, elaborate murals, and carved wood. You will discover a rare baptistry marked in five languages- a tribute to the multicolored Andes culture. We will get you back in Cusco before 1:00 P.M., and not only with photos of art and engineering, but a grounded idea of the layers there are in this region that are so deep.
